Art of Sortilege
Common among the icewalker tribes of the North, sortilege is divination though the casting of lots or bones. The thaumaturge uses ritually prepared bones that are tossed to the ground. He then interprets the pattern laid out before him.
Any animal’s bones will do, but more expensive animals add bonus dice based on the Resource cost of the animal as shown in the table below. Other forms of lots (carved wooden sticks in the East, brightly colored shells in the West or carved stones in the South for example, also provide bonuses based on the resource value of the collection of lots.
|Res 1-2||+1 die|
|Res 3-4||+2 dice|
|Res 5||+3 dice|
|Art 1||+1 success and +1 die|
Human bones may be used for this art, but only icewalker thaumaturges do so and even they have a strong taboo around this practice due to their belief that the bones must not be from a person who died due to violence. The truth behind this is that sortilege performed with the bones of a murdered person suffers a -5 internal penalty that specifically cannot remove the last die from the pool; botching any sortilege roll with the bones of a murdered person leads to false prophesies that are invariably dark in nature; however if the Storyteller feels that there is a dark future that might be predicted by this sortilege, the thaumaturge regains their lost dice as three bonus successes if they made earned any success on their actual roll.
|Apprentice Level Procedure||Attribute||Difficulty||Casting Time|
|Prepare Lots||Intelligence||2||one hour|
|custom created procedure, details to come later|
|Toss Bones||Wits||2||five minutes|
|The thaumaturge spends five minutes in meditation while shaking a container full of their ritually prepared bones. He then casts them to the ground at his feet and interprets the pattern that has been laid before him in order to gain insights that allow for further divination rituals which must be performed immediately.|
|Initiate Level Procedure||Attribute||Difficulty||Casting Time|
|Lesser Divination||Intelligence||4||fifteen minutes|
|By meditation on the pattern of the lots before him, the thaumaturge can gain insights that allow him to make predictions about the target’s future, splitting successes between duration and accuracy. Duration: 1 (one month), 2+ (one season). Accuracy: extremely vague predictions (1) or vague (2+). Botches result in false predictions as does any attempt to targeting a Primordial or a native of the Wyld, Malfeas or the Underworld. The prediction created by the Storyteller assumes no interference from Heaven or beings that trigger automatic botches, such interference spoils predictions.|
|Adept Level Procedure||Attribute||Difficulty||Casting Time|
|As Lesser Divination, but more successes may be applied to duration or accuracy. Duration: 3 (half a year) or 4+ (one year). Accuracy: 3 (woefully incomplete but enlightening) or 4+ (somewhat accurate).|
|Master Level Procedure||Attribute||Difficulty||Casting Time|
|Greater Divination||Intelligence||4||fifteen minutes|
|As Divination, but more successes may be applied to accuracy. Accuracy: 5 (mostly accurate with details) or 6+ (accurate with details).|
